The iconography of the sacred heart is heavily rooted in religion, often representing sacrifice, devotion, suffering, Christ’s sacrificial love for man and Jesus’ passion.

While there are several variations, the sacred heart usually includes elements such as a bleeding heart, thorns, flames, daggers, roses and may be depicted with or without a cross. The imagery translates extremely well as a traditional tattoo, and thus continues to be a favorite amongst tattoo enthusiasts no matter their religious beliefs.

Another reason for the popularity of the sacred heart tattoo is its versatility. The composition is strikingly visual in both color and black and grey, and the flexibility of the elements allow the sacred heart to look great anywhere on the body as small filler tattoos, bigger stand alone pieces or as part of a large scale tattoos such as back pieces and sleeves.
