A Daruma doll (達磨) is a traditional Japanese talisman of perseverance and luck, modeled after Bodhidharma, the monk who founded Zen Buddhism.
Perseverance & Resilience: The doll’s round shape makes it return upright when pushed over, symbolizing the Japanese proverb “Nanakorobi yaoki” (七転び八起き) — “Fall down seven times, stand up eight.”
Goal-setting & Determination: Initially, the Daruma doll’s eyes are white (blank). You color the left eye (the doll’s right) when you make a wish or set a goal. Once your wish comes true or you achieve your goal, you color in the right eye to complete its vision.
Good Luck & Protection: Often used as a charm for prosperity, health, or success in business, academics and personal endeavors.
A Daruma tattoo represents persistence through hardship, resilience in chasing dreams, and faith in eventual success. It’s a powerful reminder never to give up, no matter how many times life knocks you down.
